Young-adult fiction

Young-adult fiction is a helpful, powerful, and inspiring sign, guiding the bright road to adolescents. The Catcher in the Rye gives the examples and conflicts of young-adults. It can help us fix the problem, confusion and angst. Even though it couldn’t give us any help, it still can let adolescents not be so afraid when facing the coming age. And, it could be the teacher, leading us to the light future. Besides, reading it may remind us of past experience and thoughts, refreshing our memory and also saving us from losing innocence.

Initiation

Initiation is a rite of passage ceremony marking entrance or acceptance into a group or society. It could also be a formal admission to adulthood in a community or one of its formal components. In an extended sense it can also signify a transformation in which the initiate is 'reborn' into a new role. Examples of initiation ceremonies might include Hindu diksha, Christian baptism or confirmation.

Bildungsroman

Bildungsroman is a literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood (coming of age), and in which character change is thus extremely important. Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its eponymous character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the Byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall.

Detective fiction

Detective fiction is a subgenre of crime fiction and mystery fiction in which an investigator or a detective—either professional or amateur—investigates a crime, often murder.

antihero

In literature, an antihero is a protagonist who has no heroic virtues or qualities (such as being morally good, idealistic, courageous, and noble), blurring the line between hero and villain. For example, Holden Caulfield is a typical antihero in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.

The Catcher in the Rye was originally published for adults, how come it has become one of the iconic bestsellers of Young-adult fiction? Discuss your viewpoints from the themes, the protagonist, as well as its unreliable narrator of the fiction.

The Catcher in the Rye is an unembellished, true, and inspiring record, conveying the themes of teenage confusion, angst, alienation, and rebellion. The author use lots of diction which conforms to the true thoughts of adolescents. It contains liberal use of profanity, portrayal of sexuality, and deals with complex issues of identity, belonging and connection. Also, it can refresh my memory and also revise my potential solution. The protagonist, Holden Caulfield, confronts familial neglect, tensions between teens and society, and struggles for innocence, kindness, and generosity. Actually, falling off the cliff could be a progression into the adult world where he lives and strongly criticizes. Throughout the story, Salinger often uses its unreliable narrator to talk about the alternative viewpoint in the other character’s responses to Holden’s behavior as guidelines. In conclusion, reading The Catcher in the Rye could make adolescents understand themselves more clearly because it represents the characteristic and experience of them particularly. Gaining the great responses in adolescents’ heart is the key reason why The Catcher in the Rye has become one of the iconic bestsellers of Young-adult fiction.
